The Winthrop University basketball coach and four of his players came over to join us this morning.  The players and coach mingled with the students and then spoke to the group about the importance of reading, doing well in school, respecting their elders, realizing the opportunities they have and having a plan for success.  The students really enjoyed the visit.  Hats off to the Winthrop players who woke up early to join us today!

We also had a Veterans Day assembly this morning.  Students watched a performance of, “The White Table”.  We truly appreciate all of the Veterans of our great nation!

Greetings!

I hope you are staying warm!  The cold weather seems to have come a bit early this year.  This is a busy time at Sullivan and I wanted to keep you posted!

This week is Teen Read Week.  We have a variety of activities planned in the media center.  On Tuesday morning, we will be holding a “boys only” pancake breakfast before school.  This will be a chance for our male students to discuss books with our male faculty and staff.  We will also be holding another skypecast with another middle school to discuss Hunger Games on Thursday.  There are many other events planned!

Next week is Red Ribbon Week.  The focus of red ribbon week is to educate students on the dangers of making poor decisions.  We have a slew of activities planned.  Highlights include:

Parent University Session on the dangers of drug and alcohol use by pre-teens and teens @ 6:30

Drunk driving simulation – Wednesday for 8th graders only

Report cards will be issued on November 5th, due to the employee furlough.

Please continue to encourage your child to read as much as possible.  We have been reviewing data that suggests the amount of time a child spends reading directly correlates to increased scores in school.  It is important that students read for at least 20 minutes a night at home.

All students are required to read from our summer reading list.  Details and book lists can be found on our school website.  We also have an interactive summer book blog on our website as well.  I look forward to reading your comments about the books you are reading!
